Colonel Evan Collins was in command of the American military force assigned to Operation Bronco. It was a large scale military effort designed to escort evacuees out of what was left of Denver Colorado.

“We’ve been hearing reports about your fellow warriors taking care of business all over the country.” Collins told Chipmunk and Anthony several stories about desperate battles that would’ve been lost had the Empire not intervened. “I thought it was silly stories until now.”

Anthony was glad to hear the news about the other Imperial units. “Have you heard about us taking any casualties?”

Collins shook his head. “According to legend, you people have some kind of miracle medication that fixes just about everything except death.”

Everyone worked on their preparations for the next leg of their trip. Imperial medics stitched up what wounds they could while the others helped load the flatbeds with supplies dropped by the C-130s.

“Laura,” Anthony said slowly. “How did those planes make it out here and not get hit?”

“They’ve been coated in some kind of chemical agent,” Laura replied. “Same for the cargo. It appears the U.S. forces learned a new trick all on their own.”

Anthony scanned a cargo pallet. His master key logged the chemical composition and marked it for further study. Imperial Scientists created a similar compound for ground operations so warriors could mask their movements from the Crynar. However, they never had a need to coat air and spacecraft with a solution. Laura passed the information to a medic, and inquired if they could make a similar concoction for her.

Some of the U.S. soldiers talked more about Operation Bronco as everyone worked to load the supplies onto the military and civilian vehicles. American forces had been getting their butts kicked all over the place. It would’ve been worse if they didn’t have captured alien tech. Convoys regularly delivered evacuees to safety using a relay system. That worked well for about a month until key hubs were attacked. The Bronco convoy was the last one out of Denver. People doubted there was anyone alive to the west of the Rockies.

“Why were you people not here sooner,” a US soldier asked as he helped Anthony calibrate a bipedal combat drone. It was six feet tall and carried two SLAM-88s.

Chipmunk happened to be walking by when he heard the inquiry. “Politics.” Chipmunk nodded. “A bunch of old farts flapping their jaws, trying to sound important, thought it a good idea not to get involved. They were afraid of the severe political fallout with neighboring civilizations.”

“Sounds about right,” the U.S. soldier replied. “What happens now?”

“We’ll do what we can until reinforcements arrive. Once that happens, I doubt our neighboring civilizations will interfere.” Chipmunk winked at Anthony before he walked away.

The soldier looked at Anthony and narrowed their eyes. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“We call aliens NHC’s,” Anthony explained. “Non-Human Civilizations, or citizens. Anyway, those civilizations formed something like NATO, and called it the Joint Systems Coalition.”
